Nicotine is a poison in high concentration and highly addictive when smoked.  But it is not the culprit for causing cancer. Nicotine however may have links to certain changes in brain chemistry over time. Nicotine is not a good thing for the body, but it is not the cause of cancer. Further proof:

Women also were more likely than men to have feelings of guilt, fear, and worry associated with tobacco use and quitting the habit.
