Make Money in Less Time With or Without a Website

Get excited! Insanely profitable opportunity! You can make serious $$$ selling Electronic Cigarettes. Get started today with these two proven winners! If you want to make money you have to promote products that pay!

These are the two programs of many that YOU as an affiliate should be selling.

Update Nov 2009: People who smoke are a constant stream of income for you! Sell them one time and get paid over and over. I’m doing really well with e-cigs in spite of Paypal refusing to take payment from e-cigarette companies. People who buy seem to have a VISA, AMEX, or MASTERCARD. So get to work… this is paying out even better than I expected. This one is Recession Proof – when times are tough people still keep smoking!

————– This is what you can expect to make from an Average Order ————-

Please note that all commissions are initially placed in the Pending Approval page of the Commissions tab in your affiliate back office. 30 days after the products have shipped (i.e. the grace period for the 30-day money back guarantee has passed), the commission is eligible to be approved. It will then be approved on the upcoming 15th of the month.

In rare instances, a sale may be appropriated to the wrong account. We reserve the right to correct any discrepancies regarding misapplied commissions.

Here is a little “Proof” so you can see what average commissions look like for this program. This one is not going to make me a millionaire, but it does add some nice income to my monthly revenue stream.

Commission Amount: $8.25 USD
Order Number: 100511-15XX37-7XX3

Commission Amount: $20.25 USD
Order Number: 100429-14XX28-3XX7

Commission Amount: $16.71 USD
Order Number: 100420-08XX49-8XX2

Commission Amount: $20.01 USD
Order Number: 100425-11XX20-7XX5

The great thing about this program is it’s an “Evergreen Niche” – you get paid for return purchases!

—————- These add up in a hurry if you can move product! —————————

There is no other opportunity for 2010 where even a little guy can get rich! What matters as an affiliate is not what other people are selling, but what YOU can make money selling. Focus on the money! In 2008 the USA Market for e-cigarettes was $100 million! In 2009… it’s exploding! How much money will you make?

There are other programs, but these have the best product materials to make your job as an affiliate simple. I can’t make the money for you… you still have to do that… but in the world of affiliate marketing it doesn’t get easier than this. You’ll come across BluCigs as they have a good site design and nice graphics, but they are always out of stock. And if people can’t buy you can’t make money!

Exactly Why You Should Be Promoting Electronic Cigarettes…

On Monday June 22, 2009 President Obama signed legislation allowing the FDA (The Food and Drug Administration) to regulate the tobacco industry. And while this may be a good thing for the Health of the Nation it’s horrible news for people who profit from the Tobacco Industry. Prices of Cigarettes are going to continue to skyrocket. Add to this the continuing tax burden State Governments are placing on Cigarettes and you should be able to easily see that Smoking is one very expensive habit.

People should just quit right? Yes, probably so. But they CAN NOT quit because they are addicted. And addiction is a terrible thing, but you can take advantage of it … by marketing Electronic Cigarettes!

And here is some great news… not only are you going to make money… you are going to be helping people get healthier! Tobacco smoke contains 4,000 chemicals known to cause cancer. Electronic cigarettes contain water vapor, flavoring, and nicotine (You can actually order electronic cigarette cartridges with ZERO nicotine). So while electronic cigarettes may not be 100% safe the are many times safer than tobacco cigarettes.

Nicotine is not a cancer causing agent… in fact it occurs naturally in tomatoes, potatoes, and eggplant.

The Nicotine Content of Common Vegetables:

There is considerable evidence that nicotine is present in certain human foods, especially plants from the family Solanaceae (such as potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant). Castro and Monji,2 Sheen,3 and Davis et al.4 have reported on the nicotine content of foods and drinks. New England Journal of Medicine

Source: http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/extract/329/6/437

Nicotine is a poison in high concentration and highly addictive when smoked. But it is not the culprit for causing cancer. Nicotine however may have links to certain changes in brain chemistry over time. Nicotine is not a good thing for the body, but it is not the cause of cancer. Further proof:

Women who smoke are more concerned about their habit and their ability to quit than men, yet both genders appear misinformed about smoking and its link to cancer. In a new study presented at CHEST 2005, the 71st annual international scientific assembly of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP), the majority of smokers mistakenly believed nicotine causes cancer, leading many to smoke “light” cigarettes because they believed them to be less harmful. Women also were more likely than men to have feelings of guilt, fear, and worry associated with tobacco use and quitting the habit.

So now you can feel good about promoting a product that helps smokers get more healthy. Lets face it who wants to make a buck promoting something that hurts people? I don’t.

The Market for Smoking Materials is GIGANTIC!

It’s estimated in the United States that about 1 in 4 Adults smoke cigarettes. That is a huge market that is currently untapped, but it gets even better when you factor in the rates of smoking around the world.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Gallup first asked Americans about their smoking habits more than 60 years ago, and recent Gallup polling finds Americans reporting among the lowest smoking rates ever measured (24%). The percentage of Americans saying they have smoked cigarettes in the past week did not drop to approximately one-quarter of the population until the mid-1990s. Gallup has asked respondents in more than 90 countries around the globe a similar question regarding their smoking habits, and the data indicate a median percentage of 22%. This result is statistically similar to the U.S. rate, but in some individual countries this figure ranges from a fraction of the U.S. responses to more than 40%.

You can read about the rest of the worlds smoking rate here: http://www.gallup.com/poll/28432/smoking-rates-around-world-how-americans-compare.aspx

So now you can see there is a GIGANTIC market.

Are you a Person Who has Trouble Finding Profitable Niches?

Then this opportunity is for you! Why? Because even if there is tons of competition the market is so huge that there is room for tons of Affiliates. Think about it. With all those smokers you are bound to come across people you can promote to.

The Profit Margins on Electronic Cigarettes are Very Good

Why sell a product that costs $25-50 and pays only 4 or 5% like most of the products on Amazon? Or Travel products like Airline Tickets which pay 2%? Start making real money you can promote Electronic Cigarettes that pay $10-20% and the company I am showing you will pay you OVER AND OVER each time the customer you send them makes a purchase!

Simple Way to Promote Offline for Massive Profits

Think about this simple method. How often do you see smokers in your everyday life? What is to stop you from taking your marketing efforts offline? Have a 1,000 business cards printed up with your special affiliate code. The company I’m showing you gives you a special coupon code you can print on your business cards that allows each of YOUR customers to get either 5% OR 10% OFF! You decide.

Now you carry these cards with you whenever you are out… the grocery store, the clubs, the gym (Yes the Gym… what a great place, people who smoke work out too!), church, everywhere. And hand them out. Tell them about the benefits of switching to Electronic Cigarettes.

Your Promotion Possibilities are Nearly Limitless.

Summary of Why You Should Be Promoting Electronic Cigarettes

Huge Market Worldwide that is just in it’s infancy

Health Benefits to Existing Smokers

High Commissions

Here is what REAL People (Smokers) are saying about Electronic Cigarettes

Jun 11th, 2009 11:55 pm

I am impressed with the many smokers who say these work. I worry about them being made in China. I don’t trust China. They’ve poisoned enough people/babies/animals already. Wish they were made in the good old USA. “lifestyle tax” is coming next!

Pam from Cheshire, CT

Jun 10th, 2009 10:26 pm

Within a week I went from a pack a day for 30 yrs to 0. Aside from the obvious – no smoke, no smell, no carcinogens etc, I noticed if I get any vapor in my eyes, it doesn’t sting like smoke. My animals don’t even blink if it blows in their faces

Karen from Spring Hill, FL

Jun 10th, 2009 9:47 pm

I smoked a pack a day for 35 years, and quit because of ecigs. It’s saving my life! And the FDA and anti smoking groups are concerned for my health? They want to remove ecigs from the market, but KEEP cigarettes for sale? Talk about contradiction.

Mark from Wadsworth, OH

Jun 10th, 2009 8:24 pm

After 22 years of smoking over a pack per day, e-cigarettes got me off of cigarettes in 2 days. After 8 weeks I’m using 0 nicotine in my e-cig. I can see why Philip Morris and the government are about to ban this. They’re losing victims too fast.

James from Warwick, RI

Jun 10th, 2009 12:08 pm

The fact that the FDA is considering a ban on this safer e-cig alternative is appalling. Aren’t they SUPPOSED to be the watchdog for public health and not Philip Morris’s puppet? I was a 2 pack a day smoker for 20 years. The -ecig is saving my life!

Anna from TN

Jun 10th, 2009 10:24 am

I’m not one of those people who flaunt the ecig in public. I’m just happy my lungs feel better, my husband can’t smell the ecig, I have energy, I could go on and on. Whatever the FDA finds, I KNOW ecigs are healthier than the reg cigs. I FEEL better!

Michelle from Montana

Jun 10th, 2009 8:25 am

Amazing, the Bull our govt will come up with when their tax income is being threatened. The FDA already APPROVED a Nicotine inhaling device! I tried one MANY times hoping to quit a 25 year, pack/day habit! With my e-cigg, 46 days smoke free!

Julie from ATL, GA

Jun 9th, 2009 4:48 pm

I’m a non-smoker but ever since I learned about e-cigs I’ve been trying to convert my friends. I rarely get involved in politics, but I believe in e-cigs will help to keep them from getting banned in any way I can. Smokers should have a choice!

Matt from Cheyenne, WY

Jun 9th, 2009 3:07 pm

Excellent article. On 3/10 I switched from a pack a day smoker for 15 years to e-cigs. I don’t smell like an ashtray, my smell/taste have returned, and I’ve stepped down to a lower dosage. Starter pack M401 $50. Fill my own carts @ ~$20/mo.

Chris from Portland Oregon

Jun 9th, 2009 1:09 pm

Thanks for an excellent article. E-cigarettes have caused me to give up smoking traditional cigarettes. They’re effective and represent greatly reduced risk. People need to know the truth about them.

Matt from Orlando

Jun 9th, 2009 12:54 pm

I’ve been tobacco-free with my e-cigs for the last 55 days. I feel better, can breathe easier, and have more energy than I ever had while smoking 2 packs a day for 19 years.

Debbie from St. Petersburg

Jun 9th, 2009 12:31 pm

Was a pack & 1/2 smoker for 30+ yrs. am now down to 2 cigs. per day, hopefully 0 soon, after 9 days using my e-cig.

Debra from Tarpon Springs, FL

Jun 9th, 2009 11:05 am

I haven’t smoked a cigarette in two months thanks to the e-cig. After 40 years of smoking 1 1/2 packs a day, that’s a huge thing for me! Nicotine gum didn’t work. This works. You can get different strengths of nicotine or none at all.

SB from Tampa

Jun 9th, 2009 8:04 am

Karen: You can fill them with nicotine-free e-liquid. I stopped smoking over a month ago using an e-cig with NO problem, after 1 pack/day for 15 years. It’s great. Sadly, if Big Pharma NOR Big Tobacco can profit, they’ll probably be banned.

Karen from Dunellon, Florida

Jun 9th, 2009 7:21 am

I bought the Njoy e-Cigarette & am disappointed. I love the concept, but you aren’t saving any money with Njoy. One pack of 10 cartridges is 19.99 plus tax… 1 cartridge is equal to about a 1/2 pack of cigarettes. Be careful which brand you buy.

There are 2 kinds of people making $1,000′s a day with ClickBank.

1. The Super Affiliate. This person really knows there stuff. They understand they need to drive a lot of traffic to a specific landing page that has been written to convert. They may spend $100′s of dollars a day on Pay Per Click Advertising, or they may have a large list of subscribers that they mail to, or they may have a ton of traffic to their existing websites. Most likely that are doing a combination of all three methods.

2. The Affiliate Program Owner. These are the people that create the product to sell on ClickBank then recruit affiliate marketers to sell their products for them.

Can you be a Super Affiliate or create your own product? If you can you can really make money with Clickbank.

Lets Talk Money and How You Get Paid by ClickBank

Most of this information comes directly from ClickBank and you should take the time to read their help files. But for your convenience I’m going to sort out the important facts for you.

Most New Affiliate Marketers get in such a rush to promote ClickBank programs they don’t take the time to read their “fine print”. This is a huge mistake and could really cost you! You must understand the payment process.

How Commissions Are Calculated and Reported

Every ClickBank product has a commission rate that is set by the vendor, ranging from 1% to 75%. When you drive a sale to that product, ClickBank processes the sale, applies its charges, then calculates the commission rate based on the remaining net sale amount. Here’s an example of how much you’ll earn on a one-time purchase product with a 55% commission rate:

Retail Price: $29.95
Subtract 7.5% + $1: -$3.25
Net Sale Amount: $26.70
55% of Remainder: $14.69

Therefore, as the referring affiliate for this sale, you would earn $14.69.

The maximum commission you can earn on a single sale is $150.

Getting Paid by Clickbank

Obviously, the goal of being an affiliate is to get paid for your efforts. To receive your first commission payment, there are two requirements:

1. You must reach your Payment Threshold:

The “Payment Threshold” is a predetermined minimum amount of money you must have in your account before we cut you a check. You may select an amount from $10 to $100,000 as your Payment Threshold amount. The default setting is $100. We hold your payment until your payable balance reaches this amount. A $2.50 pay period processing charge is deducted from each payment we issue. To change your Payment Threshold, login to your account and select the “Account Settings” tab. Click “Edit” to the right of the “Payment Information” section. Select the “Payment Threshold” of your choice, and click the “Save Changes” button.

2.You must meet the Customer Distribution Requirement:

ClickBank will withhold payment of any account balance until the following criteria is met:

Sales made with 5 or more different credit card numbers; and,

Sales made with two different payment methods (either Visa, MasterCard, or PayPal).

Note: PayPal purchases do not count toward the minimum 5 different credit card numbers.

This requirement is in place to help prevent Affiliates from abusing the ClickBank Affiliate program by using their accounts for the sole purpose of fraudulently collecting rebates and/or discounts on their own purchases.

Once you have met the Customer Distribution Requirement, your account will begin issuing payments normally, in accordance with our Accounting Policy, beginning on the next payment issuing date.

Now Here is Where ClickBank Really Sticks it to the Average Affiliate Marketer

Dormant Accounts

Accounts with a positive balance but no earnings for an extended period of time are considered dormant. Dormant accounts are subject to a charge of $1 per pay period after 90 days of no earnings, $5 per pay period after 180 days of no earnings, and $15 per pay period after 365 days of no earnings.

Refunds and Chargebacks

One question you may have is whether you will still receive your affiliate commission if the product is returned or if the customer requests a chargeback on the purchase. Unfortunately, the answer is no. All money is returned to the customer, so the vendor and affiliate must return their portions of the sale as well.

Because of the 60-day return period for all ClickBank products, we utilize a return allowance to cover the possibility of returns.

So Can You Make Money With ClickBank?

Maybe! But you really need to be aware of these rules. Unfortunately the average guy will only make a couple of sales and never be paid. If you are going to promote ClickBank products you’ll need to do PPC or have a pretty steady stream of targeted traffic. If your site gets less than 200 unique visitors a day I wouldn’t do ClickBank. Instead focus on other affiliate products and Adsense. Then as you build your traffic you can introduce ClickBank to your visitors.

Remember this simple fact (And forget about the Hype you read from people claiming to make $1,000′s a day)… conversion ratios matter!

If you have 200 visitors and a 5% click through rate you’ll have 10 hops a day! On an average site it is not uncommon to have an actual conversion ratio of 1 in 500. This does not mean that for every 500 visitors you make a sell, it means for every 500 visitors that actually click on your Clickbank link you’ll make a sell. So the real numbers look like this:

200 x 5% = 10 click throughs to your Click Bank Hop a day

1 sale per 500 visitors = 1 sale every 50 days!

Crazy eh? You bet it is and if you are doing one sale every 50 days it’s going to take you a while to get your first check! These are real numbers folks! Some people do better of course can’t even do this well. It’s all about traffic and conversions.

Lets take a better case example. Lets say you have 500 vistors a day at 5% click through and a conversion rate of 1 in 200.

500 x 5% = 25 click throughs to your Click Bank Hop a day

1 sale per 200 visitors = 1 sale every 8 days!

Much much better, but can you live on a single sale once per week? This is the reality of selling ClickBank products. You need traffic and you need conversions. This is why so many new marketers get frustrated. They confuse visitors with conversions. It works like this:

Someone visits your site>They read your pitch and decide to click or leave>If they click they read the pitch on the Affiliate Site then stay or leave>If they stay they click the buy button>Do they stay or leave?

Selling is a process and buyers are always reluctant to pull the trigger. Most people drop out at the shopping cart. This is fact!

The Easiest Affiliate Networks to Join for New Online Marketers

Are you the type of person who has a lot of ambition and desire, but doesn’t know exactly how to get started as an Affiliate Marketer? Then this page is for you. These companies are the easiest for new Online Marketers to join. So if you don’t know where to start or “how to” find affiliate programs this is the place for you. There are several more Affiliate Networks you can join, bet these are the easiest to get accepted into when you are new.

Max Bounty

FACTS: By far the easiest way to get started. Choose from 50-100 current offers. MaxBounty is a CPA (Cost Per Action) Network Company. What this means is you get paid when a customer takes an action on an offer. In simpler terms this can mean anything from inserting a ZIP Code, an email address, or making a purchase. Offers include things like Personals/Dating, Surveys, Free Giveaways, Coupons, Free Trials, Ringtones, etc.

Linkshare

FACTS: LinkShare is a professional big time company. You MUST have a professional looking website before you join; however it’s easier to join than Commission Junction. No one should try and join Commission Junction until they have some experience, because they are very quick to close out non performing accounts. Linkshare on the other hand is much more tolerant of lower performing accounts. Linkshare offers a huge selection of quality merchants from a variety of industries – Automotive, Financial Services, Health and Beauty, Games and Toys, etc. You should be able to find programs from almost any viable niche.

MoreNiche

FACTS: First I am going to tell you a very simple “Trick” to make yourself lots of money! MoreNiche pays big commissions to people to promote their products directly by referral. What this means is simple. Sign up for MoreNiche then go get the code to promote the MoreNiche Brand. You make a quick $20 for everyone you can sign up. This is an easy program to promote in Forums and Blog posts, but you have to join first. Then take a hard look at the products they offer and see if they fit your own sites. The product line is mostly Casino/Adult/Health related. I have a dedicated post in this same category to MoreNiche you may want to read.

PepperJam Network

FACTS: PepperJam is growing faster than any other Affiliate Network Company. Each day new advertisers are coming on board. PepperJam will also pay you to recruit new affiliates, but not as much as MoreNiche. PepperJam has a lot of clothing and consumer/retail offers. Pepperjam also has an excellent selection of “cut and paste” banner advertisements for the new marketer.

Adbrite

FACTS: Adbrite offers Adsense Style Advertisements. The “Trick” with Adbrite is to take the time to read the offers and be selective in what y ou display. Some ads can pay as little as a penny or two per click. Sites with large amounts of traffic in select industries can do very well with Adbrite, others will be a waste of time. Definitely a program to check out and learn from the inside out. I have a separate post on Adsense Alternatives which includes information on how to profit with Adbrite.

ShareaSale

Webmaster Sign Up: Shareasale

FACTS: Established in 2000, Shareasale began on the premise that they could provide any merchant – large or small – with high quality, reliable tracking software – at a lower cost than the industry norm – with the added benefit of being plugged into a large network of quality affiliate sites. ShareaSale is a good network for Affiliate interested in smaller niches and working with small businesses. While Commission Junction and LinkShare go after the big boys like American Express and Netflix, shareasale focuses on the smaller business which when appropriately applied can be extremely profitable. Don’t overlook Shareasale there are some real gems hiding within the ShareaSale etwork!

ClickBank

Webmaster Sign Up: ClickBank

FACTS: Well this is both opinion and fact so here goes. ClickBank… love em or hate em. Yes there is a whole lot of Crap within the 10,000 digital products you can promote. Finding the true opportunities will make the difference between your success or failure. Take the time to read everything you can on the site so you understand the ins and outs before you jump in and start promoting. Be aware that ClickBank isn’t exactly a secret site… pretty much everyone in the Industry is promoting somehing from ClickBank so you’ll have your work cut out for you. The Top Products are heavily promoted. Find you niche!

Commission Junction

CJ is a very solid network, I promote my share of CJ Affiliate Programs, but they are not the best place to start. You want to have a fully developed site/blog and some traffic before you sign up. There is no point in signing up until you are ready. They may not accept you, and even if they do you may have your account terminated if you don’t start producing quickly.

Tip: The Best Affiliate Program isn’t always buried within a network. Many companies run their own operations. It’s up to you to find the products and services that match your niche.

Have You Been Banned or Not Accepted into the Google Adsense Program?

First off I’m not going to bullshit you… it’s a lot harder to make money with Adbrite than Adsense. It’s harder to make money with Adbrite than Yahoo. But what if you can’t get into Adsense or YPN? Well you should focus on affiliate marketing, but if you still want to go after contextual advertising then you may still want to consider Adbrite. Adbrite is a huge company and there is a ton of money to be made. But you really have to know what you are doing with Adbrite or you simply won’t make much money.

The bottom line is people are making some serious cash month after month year after year with Adsense. I know… I’m one of them. I do not display Adsense here on Internet Marketing IQ because my target audience is very Adsense Savvy and it doesn’t make sense for this site. This is why you seldom see Adsense on any of the other Top Marketing Blogs. But it makes huge Sense (Pun intended) on sites that are marketed to the general public.

You should also know that there is no real Alternative that pays in the contextual marketing space as well as Adsense. The reason is simple… Adsense has the mindshare of the Advertiser. They have a huge volume of Advertisers ready to spend in almost every niche.

However there are “similar” programs which if carefully crafted can yeild some impressive returns.

Adsense Alternative – Adbrite works! (Learn more…)

If you are unfamiliar with the Adbrite Network you need to know it is NOT as simple or as easy to make money as the Google Adsense program. However with a little “tweaking” you really can make money. To use Adbrite effectively you need to understand your traffic sources.

The Upside to the Adbrite Network

A variety of Advertisers

Cut and Paste Code

Decent Statistical Tracking

CPM, Full Page, and Inline Ad options

Text and Banner options

The Downside to the Adbrite Network

Low Traffic Sites perform poorly

Niches that are too “tight” may perform poorly

Not as many ad block size options as Adsense

How to make Adbrite Work for You

The first thing you need to do is get yourself an account. Fortunately its much much easier than applying to Adsense. And yes there are rules, but it’s not a tight as the Adsense rules.

Click the Button Below to go Directly to the PUBLISHER sign up page.

How to Make Money with Adbrite

Adbrite has a lot of low paying JUNKY looking CPM Advertisements. If your site is displaying these ads you’ll make next to nothing because you are paid a set amount per 1,000 Ad Exposures. Most small sites simply do not have the traffic to make money with CPM.

What you need to do is set up your site to make money from the Cost Per Click Ads. And here is where it can get tricky, and you MUST have patience.

The first thing you need to do is set your ads to display everything available, and to create your Adzones with the most appropriate Keywords to your niche. You’ll go back and “fix” your keyword selections in a few days after you have some test data.

Then you let you site “rest” for a couple of days, perhaps even a week. Now you can go in an look to see who is bidding on Advertisements to display on your site (You know this by the Ads that are displaying). Now is the time to uncheck the display all ads, and let advertisers bid on your site. This will take more days of testing, but this is the only way to figure out who is willing to pay and what you can effectively charge.

Unlike Adsense you can choose the ads to display and you can set your minimum price. Set it too low and you get junk, set it too high and you get nothing!

After the “testing period” it’s time to tweak your advertising campaigns. If your keywords are too narrow you need to widen them to make your site more available to additional advertisers on the network. So if your site were specifically about Chevy Corvettes and you picked a tight group of niche keywords that is not performing it’s time to back up and select new keywords.

In this case you would want to consider such broad keywords as “Automotive”, “Car Rental”, “Insurance”, “Loans”. That is how you’ll get the ads that pay on your site.

Adbrite is a little more work to set up, and more work to monitor, but if you are careful and test your Ad Zones you really can make money with Adbrite.

Adbrite is also a great way for you to Test Advertisments BEFORE you jump on Googles Adwords program.

Best of luck with your Adbrite Campaigns.

Yahoo Publisher Network

Honestly it’s nearly impossible to get accepted into unless you have a ton of traffic and can figure out how to communicate directly with a representative. The upside is it works, the downside is the “Beta” is still in “Beta” 4 years after the fact.

You can try, and I’d suggest you do… but don’t get you hopes up.

What About the Other Contextual Advertising Programs for Publishers?

I don’t use any others because I am successful with Adsense and YPN and I’ve tried a few other including Chitika and found that for my marketing methods Affiliate Programs pay much better. Actually Affilaite Programs pay much better on many of my sites than YPN or Adsense as well.

1. Example Opportunity one pays $1 per customer

2. Example Opportunity pays $120 x 8% = $9.60 for the same customer!!!

Go for the Residual Commissions or Lose!

When affiliate marketing you are working for nothing until you get a sale! No sale, No paycheck! Fair? Sure, right up to the point where the company you are working with emails the hell out of the new customers you are sending them effectively cutting you out of the loop — (1 referral = 1 sale). You want 1 referral to equal many sales!

Send your customers off to an affiliate site without “Preselling” or capturing an email address and guess what? You’ve wasted an opportunity to gain a lifetime customer. This is a cruel reality in affiliate marketing. Sometimes there is no way around this depending on the niche and the products available. But it’s always in your best interest to find companies that pay residuals (Meaning they pay you commission each time the customer buys). If you can not get a residual you had better get a big chunk up front or you are not going to make any REAL money.

800 Numbers can really HURT you!

The number one way to be cheated (In my opinion) is by placing 800 telephone numbers on the landing pages. Sure they may say all the customer has to do is give them your ID, but this seldom happens. Everyone isn’t comfortable buying online and it’s oh so easy just to pick up the telephone and dial that 800 number!

This is especially true of customers who are not sure or “on the fence” about a product. It’s your job to make sure they buy from you!

Cross Selling Other Affiliate Products from Your Traffic

Carefully select the companies you choose to promote. Dig into the webiste of the Affiliate you are considering. Do they sell other products that are similar for other affiliates? Is the program really just a scam to get you to drive the sale of those products by offering big commissions as “bait” on the main product, then linking out to better opportunities for the visitor for which they (Not You) get the commission. This is no joke, it happens. There are many examples of this tactic, but the most obvious are those affiliate sites that are Adsense Participants.

Not following the Buying Process Can Really Hurt You

If you want to make money with affiliate marketing, buy the product you are going to sell through your own link. This way you’ll know your link works and you will get paid for future sales. If you don’t have enough confidence in the value of the product then how the hell can you tell others they should buy it? I only promote what I buy.

Don’t make the mistake of assuming the buying process works… TEST IT to make sure it works! Otherwise you have totally wasted your time.

Buying an affiliate product will put you on the “insider” mailing list so you see the “Backend” marketing campaign. Your ability to write an honest review of the product/service will multiply resulting in more sales and more money for you. Imagine if you have a difficult time ordering then how many sales can you expect by sending your customers through a difficult ordering process? Plus owning good products benefits your business productivity and it’s a deductible business expense.

Keep up with the Terms of Service Agreements

Affiliate Programs may change the terms of the agreement on the fly, but conveniently forget to email their affiliate team (Perhaps it’s YOUR fault for not keeping a working email on file with each program). A Program may run a promotional link then time it out, but the customer is still delivered to their site. This doesn’t happen as often with the affiliate Brokers like Commission Junction. This is why it’s vital to take advantage of the built in reporting features they offer. It’s your job to read the fine print and keep up with what is going on with your own affiliate links – check them from time to time to make sure they are working.

Voiding Sales and Slow Payment

Then there are the companies that will cheat you by voiding some of your sales and there is very little you can do about this other than move on. It’s their word or reputation that a customer canceled the order. It happens so don’t let a few bother you, but if there are more than a few cancled orders it may be time to bail out. Every major Affiliate Marketer has been burned and most for 1,000′s of dollars. It sucks, but it happens and there isn’t much you can do about it but move on. Bankruptcy’s fall under the same proceedings. Enjoy the notices you will get for the next 5 years while the courts distribute the assets to secured creditors and you get nothing.

The affiliate marketing game is a tough one. If you are going to be successful you have to really keep on top of who you work with and make damn sure they pay you and on time. I’ve been burned on this one too many times. Usually for small amounts that I just didn’t follow up on.

Timing Out a Program and Setting a High Dollar Threshold

A major cheat tactic involves moving or timing out a dollar threshold or setting the threshold unreasonably high. This means you have to earn a certain amount within a certain time or they take your commissions and start you over for the new period.

Some programs simply set the threshold so high the majority of their affiliates will never reach it and just give up so they will never have to pay. Think of the millions Google makes by closing out all the accounts that never reach $100. It may seem small, but it’ s not. Millions of dollars going into the bank in Google’s name not the Webmaster that earned it. Think about this for a moment – If Google charges $1 a click and pays out 5 cents to the webmaster then kills their account before they reach $100 they could make $1-2,000 for every Noobie Fool they can sign up! If you are going to play the Adsense Game make sure you have a plan to profit so you are not wasting your time. The same is true of Amazon who has an incredibly short cookie and will Email your Referrals to death!

Split Thresholds

A variant of the High Dollar Threshold is to “split” it among different parts of the site or product lines. For example: One affiliate I was considering sold downloadable video product. Commissions were only paid after you reached a certain dollar amount for each product. Let me clarify further. They set the threshold at $100 for each. So you sell $75 of Video A, $90 of Video B and $40 of Video C. Your total is $205 and you’re over the threshold right? Wrong. Instead of getting a check for $205 you get nothing; because no one single video has gone over $100. Then they just pull the old videos off as new ones are added and you get nothing. Affiliate Manager who do this kind of thing are scumbags and in it for the short haul only. But this kind of thing happens.

Watch those Cookies!

Most Affiliate programs are still using “cookies” and a short “cookie” duration will kill your commissions. Amazon.com is the best known Affiliate Program that takes advantage of novice webmasters! Honestly they have a $100 threshold and a 1 day cookie duration! You had better make sure you presell and your conversion ratios are super high if you plan to promote any of their products. Honestly 1 day? And who doesn’t know Amazon.com? Do you think your customer is going to return to your site to buy something from Amazon? NO! They are going to bookmark the page and go direct.

Amazon knows this and that’s why the cookie is so short. Why do people bother with Amazon.com at all? I’d suspect there are two types of Amazon Affiliates – those who are “clueless” or “new” and those who really understand this game and have super tight niches, and know how to get their visitors to take action now.

Accounts Receivable Terms that Drag on and on

Many affiliate programs require you to wait months to be paid! You make the sale then some time next month after the sale they calculate your commission, then the following month they send the checks and on and on. It’s not uncommon for some to try and stretch payment out a full 90 days or even more. They do this so the money can sit in their bank accounts and make them more money. Not highly ethical and not a smart business practice if you want to attract and keep good affiliates. Companies that do this know what they are doing and could care less about you.

Super Affiliates (The webmasters who really are making the bulk of the income for the Merchant are not likely to put up with Affiliate Programs that delay their pay – and you shouldn’t either). If a program cheats you, write them and try to get paid. Slow payment is a sign of serious trouble. You may want to pull your links and bail before while you can.

If a company owes you $1,000′s it may make sense to pursue legal avenues (But the chance of you being paid is extremely small, and legal fees will probably eat up most of the money). Get your money as quickly as possible. Use direct deposit if available.

A Final Thought About Keeping Your Affiliate Commissions

For every clever webmaster who thinks they are going to game the Affiliate there is a clever Affiliate Manager who is going to game right back. Try to find ethical companies and play by the rules. If the rules don’t suit your needs then move on or try to get better terms or clarification from the program.
