Let me clarify that what I am about to present to you is not about ranking your site, or your Home Page. It’s about Ranking Your Specific Long Tail Keyword Phrases… these are your money phrases, the phrases that people use once they have narrowed down their search – the Keyword Phrases that MAKE MONEY!

The first thing you MUST understand if you want to Rank Well for a Long Tail Keyword Search Phrase

PageRank is not SiteRank – Pages rank on their own for specific search phrases. You can not rank a single page for every phrase you want to rank. While you want a diverse incoming link base, you want those incoming links to be tied to specific anchor text phrases and to specific pages.

Too often people who do not understand this principal go out and just get as many links as they can and actually do themselves irreversible harm! They create untargeted incoming links that just confuse Google.

What does that tell you about the PR as a ranking indicator? Answer: It is not! You rank for the phrase and the page content NOT the site!

Why does this PR ZERO Page using this Targeted Keyword Phrase Rank so High?

• The #1 Site contains the EXACT keyword Phrase in both the Title and the URL and has a nice distribution in their body text.

• The URL does NOT point to the Home Page, rather a highly targeted content page directly related to the search.

More Analysis:

I placed the High Ranking URL in SEO Elite so I could examine the linking structure and anchor text. The results are as follows:

Incoming text links:

• PR 4 – 1
• PR 3 – 1
• PR 2 – 4
• PR 1 – 4
• All other incoming links show no PR!

Only 19 incoming links total! All .com’s no edu, no .gov, no .net – Okay we all know that Google doesn’t like to show us the full results so one could infer there are additional incoming links… but the trend for low PR sites in this case is evident.

The majority of incoming links are from sites created between 2004-2008

Not listed in Yahoo, Wikipedia, or DMOZ

Anchor Text Analysis

Anchor Text from incoming links is split almost equally between the 3 keywords.

Cross Linking

This site cross links extensively between other company owned sites using specific targeted keyword phrases. Because the links are relevant it appears to be helping not hurting. So much for cross linking penalties! You should infer that it’s okay as long as the links are relevant. This is a sticky issue, but all you can do is test it for yourself.

Domain Age

This site was registered in 1998

Conclusion:

While you can not draw specific conclusions from a single Case Study with a single keyword phrase you can infer the following (I see these trends over and over as I do keyword research).

• PR does NOT matter for Long Tail keywords… get over it, forget about it, and move on. I do not believe it matters for any ranking. It’s just an indicator like a thermometer that says… yes we know about you and think your site is just nifty. Google is not publishing information to the general public in their PR indicator that really makes any difference to you.

• Keyword Anchor Text is CRITICAL. Do NOT mix up you keyword anchor text when commenting, posting to forums, etc. You want aneven distribution of your keywords… there are plenty of scrape sites and other sites you can not control who will mess this up for you. If you are targeting “Safe Baby Toys” the most variation you create for your own links would be to rearrange the words like this: “Baby Toys that are Safe”, “Safe Baby Toys”, “Safe for Baby Toys”… filler words like the, and or etc. don’t matter.

• The Age of your site absolutely matters. The older the better. Not much you can do about this. This is the reward for being an established business. If you have a great idea, buy the domain now, put up a little content and let it settle in. You’ll need it later.

• Use your keyword phrase in your Title in Exact Form. Put it in your URL and include it in your body text. I see this over and over in top ranking results.

• You should target your incoming links for each specific phrase to the page with the content, not your Home Page (Unless your Home Page is the target destination for the Long Tail Keyword Phrase).

FYI: The PR 4 site that ranks #2 has 50 “Dot Com’s” linking back to it from PR 1-6 sites and it’s getting beat! It does not contain the same high quality targeted anchor text link structure. It just has a lot more authority.

So if you are focusing on long tail you now know what to do! You still want high quality authority links… but you want to focus on your keyword phrase and anchor text. A high authority site will always outrank you all things being equal, but if you do your homework you can move to the top with Long Tail Keyword Phrases!

Link Trading – Avoid being Scammed

I have been cheated; you’ll be cheated. When you get taken too many times and it sours your attitude about Online Marketing.  So what can you do to avoid the rip offs and scams? There are steps you can take to avoid wasting your time chasing link exchanges from unscrupulous webmasters.

The Internet is full of BAD KARMA and people who think they can get ahead by cheating you. Foster and Build relationships. I can not tell you how many times over my Online Marketing Career I have fulfilled my end of the link trading bargain only to check back as little as a few days later to see my link had been removed. This is why I focus on content and creating my own links with relevant complementary comments and social networking.

Companies wanting to get traffic will hire people to contact you to build links. Often they tell you how great your site is or some other cheesy flattering remark. Or they have some “trick” they are proposing like you link to Site A and then we link back to you from site B. Be wary – tricks have a way of backfiring and are not worth your time.

The professional link company gets you to link to the site they want to promote. They continue to build the list of links for the client. Then a few months (or even weeks later) they remove the links page from the main site. Of you have linked not to their crappy links page, but to their HOMEPAGE. So they incur no penalty for running their link farm, but they gain all the benefits. Don’t fall for it! Here is Another Very Common & Deceptive Practice

A site asks to trade links with you sends you an email stating they have “Already Linked to Your Site”. This is intended to make you feel obligated; but is presented as a gesture of good will. So you go to the site and there is your link. So you link back to them and forget about it. How long will they keep that link up? Who knows. Do you have time to go back and check it later. I hope you are too busy for that. Make sure if you participate in this kind of linking you verify a couple of things first.

1. The site is actually related thematically to yours – if not then pass.
2. They are not hiding your link from the Search Engines will Nofollow Tags (Check the Page Headers not just the link) or programming scripting.

Don’t Bother with Link Lists Unless they are Crawled

Being on a link list will gain you no traffic (Honestly have you ever used a links list that had more than a few listings?). People simply don’t use them. Link lists are viewed the same as “Banner Blindness”. They just don’t get much use. You can verify if a link list is crawled by checking to see if it has any Pagerank or doing a search for the page of links in the Search Engine. If it doesn’t appear, it hasn’t been crawled and there is no point in trading.

If you are using a link management tool that can verify links by crawling other sites then I suppose the occasional check may be worth your efforts. But you’ll just get caught up in a lot of Non-Marketing activity adding and removing links – and it won’t make much difference – effectively wasting your time.

You should “audit” link trades with significant partners. Those partners that actually send you traffic or have very high Authority. You do this to keep in good with these links. You want your RELATIONSHIPS with these sites to remain on good terms. Sometimes other sites will use link checking software and for some reason they don’t see your link on your site so they remove the link from yours. If the link is important it may warrant your sending a quick polite note. Again if you worry too much you’ll waste time spinning your wheels and not accomplish anything.

Ask People to Link To You – Social Bookmarking

It’s a good idea to have some way for people to Bookmark your site easily and add it to a social bookmarking service. Make this visible and simple for your visitors. You should also consider a page on your site with graphics and simple code so people can link back to you. Natural Links and Manual Link Building

Natural Linking – The only way to get natural incoming links is to make a site that is so good people will WANT to link to it. That is the definition of a Natural Link… a link that is placed to your site from another site just because they like your content. I’ll skip the scraped links in this category, as they are by definition “natural”, but are not very useful as they come from really low quality sites. If you want more natural links make a great site then keep improving it.

Manual Linking – Grinding it out; asking for links one at a time manually is an approached doomed for failure as you try to scale your linking campaign. Building links manually without the proper link management tools is simply too time consuming.

Managing a dozen of so manual links is very doable. Managing 100′s or 1,000′s of links is not. If you are requesting a link from a top Authority Site you should take the time to customize your link trading request to that specific webmaster/site.

My Current Thinking on Directory Submission

Directory submission should be only a small part of your SEO Campaigns. Why?  Because there are only a few general directories that are able to send you real link love.  Most directories are just link dumps.  And while a link is a link, it only matters if it gets crawled.

Most people focus on Google and in my thinking if you are doing Directory Submissions solely to rank in Google you are probably wasting time going after anything more then the top Directories in your Selective Niche and it takes a long time to submit and wait for a response.  And the directories that can help you in Google typically have annually recurring fees.  So you’ll need to be selective.  Your link building strategy should always focus on quality and delivering real targeted traffic not just SEO.

The flip side to this is that Google is not the only player.  Sure they have the most search volume, but they are not exclusive. And directory links as long as they are crawled may help you in other Search Engines.  The “trick” if there is one is to automate and not over do it.  If you are a small marketer you don’t want you link ratio to include a disproportionate number of Directory Links.  And you should take the time to make sure that your Directory Titles and Descriptions provide Highly Relevant and Useful information to the categories in which you submit.

I have tested mass submission services and they almost never bring in enough traffic to justify even the minimal cost of participation.

Besides making your link building efforts a bore, too many listings to Google at once will send up a red flag. I know this flys in the face of logic, and it may or may not be relevant (After all how many of these directories will be crawled by Google each day and will Google really see and single out your new site?). It’s just a good strategy to work on. Consistency is the key.
