I bought the Njoy e-Cigarette & am disappointed. I love the concept, but you aren’t saving any money with Njoy. One pack of 10 cartridges is 19.99 plus tax… 1 cartridge is equal to about a 1/2 pack of cigarettes. Be careful which brand you buy.

If there are 10 fish in the pond, and 100 fisherman is that a good ratio for you? And what if the other 99 are experienced fishermen? And even if you are lucky enough to catch one of those fish, it leaves very little opportunity.

The point is to find a market where there is more opportunity. Find a market you know something about.  The world is full of products and services.  You need to find something you know something about so you can write convincing, compelling, ad copy.

How can you tell people how to make money, if you have never made money? How can you tell people what to do, if you have never done it? How do you know what works, until you have tried it?

Over and over and over…. the biggest mistake first timers make is picking the Wrong Niche.

Picking the wrong niche is like you playing 1-on-1 with Kobe Bryant for money! The first thing you have to do is practice, practice, practice. Then if you have a natural talent and you gain experience you can work your way into more competitive niches successful. And if you don’t have natural talent, then all the practice won’t help that much, but at least you’ll know it! Otherwise you are just wasting your time.

CEO’s don’t start at the top.

Pick something you know about, that has a sustainable market, and get some experience.

If you are smart then you’ll understand why you don’t pick Make Money Online as a Niche to get your feet wet. If you are not, then … well then you’re an idiot that can’t be helped. So go prove me wrong… you’ll sure show me. And in the meantime I’ll be working on projects that actually make money because I “get it”.

Let me clarify that what I am about to present to you is not about ranking your site, or your Home Page. It’s about Ranking Your Specific Long Tail Keyword Phrases… these are your money phrases, the phrases that people use once they have narrowed down their search – the Keyword Phrases that MAKE MONEY!

The first thing you MUST understand if you want to Rank Well for a Long Tail Keyword Search Phrase

PageRank is not SiteRank – Pages rank on their own for specific search phrases. You can not rank a single page for every phrase you want to rank. While you want a diverse incoming link base, you want those incoming links to be tied to specific anchor text phrases and to specific pages.

Too often people who do not understand this principal go out and just get as many links as they can and actually do themselves irreversible harm! They create untargeted incoming links that just confuse Google.

The result is non targeted keywords hurt Your Rankings. People waste way too much time trying to rank their Home Page for a ridiculously large set of keyword phrases. They lose site of the highly profitable Long Tail Keyword Phrases.

A well crafted page that is optimized for a Long Tail Keyword Phrase can outrank even high authority sites! Why? Because Google rewards information that is targeted to the search phrase over authority… they want to provide the “Best Match” for the search. This is great news for the Internet Marketer – it’s the loophole smart Internet Marketers leverage to make big profits.

Let Me Give You an Example:

Today I am researching a specific niche in Google in the Automotive Industry… a 3 word phrase “Keyword 1 Keyword 2 Keyword 3″

Here are the particulars:

• Google Local Volume: 22,000
• Anchor Text with Phrase: 770
• Competition: 137,000 *

* This is not really competition; rather the number of times this phrase appears on other pages in Google’s Index.

Google Page 1 results for this Targeted Keyword Phrase:

#1 PR 0 – that’s right ZERO!
#2 Site has a PR of 4
#3 is also Zero!
#4 is PR 3.

What does that tell you about the PR as a ranking indicator? Answer: It is not! You rank for the phrase and the page content NOT the site!

Why does this PR ZERO Page using this Targeted Keyword Phrase Rank so High?

• The #1 Site contains the EXACT keyword Phrase in both the Title and the URL and has a nice distribution in their body text.

• The URL does NOT point to the Home Page, rather a highly targeted content page directly related to the search.

More Analysis:

I placed the High Ranking URL in SEO Elite so I could examine the linking structure and anchor text. The results are as follows:

Incoming text links:

• PR 4 – 1
• PR 3 – 1
• PR 2 – 4
• PR 1 – 4
• All other incoming links show no PR!

Only 19 incoming links total! All .com’s no edu, no .gov, no .net – Okay we all know that Google doesn’t like to show us the full results so one could infer there are additional incoming links… but the trend for low PR sites in this case is evident.

Age of the Sites Linking in:

The majority of incoming links are from sites created between 2004-2008

Authority Directories

Not listed in Yahoo, Wikipedia, or DMOZ

Anchor Text Analysis

Anchor Text from incoming links is split almost equally between the 3 keywords.

Cross Linking

This site cross links extensively between other company owned sites using specific targeted keyword phrases. Because the links are relevant it appears to be helping not hurting. So much for cross linking penalties! You should infer that it’s okay as long as the links are relevant. This is a sticky issue, but all you can do is test it for yourself.

Domain Age

This site was registered in 1998

Conclusion:

While you can not draw specific conclusions from a single Case Study with a single keyword phrase you can infer the following (I see these trends over and over as I do keyword research).

• PR does NOT matter for Long Tail keywords… get over it, forget about it, and move on. I do not believe it matters for any ranking. It’s just an indicator like a thermometer that says… yes we know about you and think your site is just nifty. Google is not publishing information to the general public in their PR indicator that really makes any difference to you.

• Keyword Anchor Text is CRITICAL. Do NOT mix up you keyword anchor text when commenting, posting to forums, etc. You want aneven distribution of your keywords… there are plenty of scrape sites and other sites you can not control who will mess this up for you. If you are targeting “Safe Baby Toys” the most variation you create for your own links would be to rearrange the words like this: “Baby Toys that are Safe”, “Safe Baby Toys”, “Safe for Baby Toys”… filler words like the, and or etc. don’t matter.

• The Age of your site absolutely matters. The older the better. Not much you can do about this. This is the reward for being an established business. If you have a great idea, buy the domain now, put up a little content and let it settle in. You’ll need it later.

• Use your keyword phrase in your Title in Exact Form. Put it in your URL and include it in your body text. I see this over and over in top ranking results.

• You should target your incoming links for each specific phrase to the page with the content, not your Home Page (Unless your Home Page is the target destination for the Long Tail Keyword Phrase).

FYI: The PR 4 site that ranks #2 has 50 “Dot Com’s” linking back to it from PR 1-6 sites and it’s getting beat! It does not contain the same high quality targeted anchor text link structure. It just has a lot more authority.

So if you are focusing on long tail you now know what to do! You still want high quality authority links… but you want to focus on your keyword phrase and anchor text. A high authority site will always outrank you all things being equal, but if you do your homework you can move to the top with Long Tail Keyword Phrases!

PS: If you have high authority and targeted Long Trail you can really cash in. You’ll get there, but focus on these principals, and make money now while you grow!

2010: I am no longer recommending BANS. The BANS models is not effective moving forward. With eBay changing it’s compensation model and the BANS owners trying to dump their product it’s just not effective any more. Yes I still have my BANS sites but they no longer produce like they used to

Update December 2009: I am still using BANS and earning about $.15 cents per click under the new QPC model.  I do have days where I only make $.02-.04 cents per click.  I do not like the new QPC model, but what can you do?  So yes you can still make money with BANS.  There is a lot of rumor about Google not liking BANS and not indexing sites.  I find this to be untrue.  The way I use Bans is to incorporate it directly into other sites not as the site itself.  I have had no problems with ranking BANS stores this way.

Need an Idea for a Successful BANS Store to Sell Your eBay Favorites?

First off I think eBay is a great opportunity for new Internet Marketers to “Get their Feet Wet”. It’s easy to make a quality site and the affiliate opportunity is tremendous. I am running a couple of BANS stores.  And while I’m not swimming in cash just because of BANS I do make a nice continual income stream month after month from what I’ve set up.

I set up my first BANS Store in about an afternoon. The additional stores – after I had done the first one – I set up in about an hour! That is some screaming fast automated site design don’t you think? A fully automated Targeted eBay e-Commerce niche site in an hour!

I have a great interest in a specific type of Automobile. And the automotive niche is huge, here’s why:

• There are 1,020 cars for every 1,000 people in the USA (More than 300 million!)
• Cars are “Consumables” they break down and need repair and replacement
• Cars are “Big Ticket” items, and so are the parts/accessories (Commision Opportunity)
• People always want new cars, it’s called “Buyers Itch”
• Cars can be customized to suit an individuals personality
• eBay Motors gets over 1.2 million Searches each month just from Google!

As you can see the market is huge and wide and there is plenty of money being spent on Automobiles. So I set up my BANS store and added it to my existing automotive site, and viola! I now am a reseller of automobile parts and accessories. The site is AUTOMATICALLY (This is extremely important) updated with the newest items. I don’t have to do anything to the BANS site, but track the stats and tweek the layout accordingly.

So if you’re looking for a good niche, a good place to start, think BANS and something in the Automotive Industry.

How You Make Money With Build a Niche Store

For those of you who know me and have worked with me, I only review software I actually use. I purchased BANS in early June 2008. BANS is a script that allow you to set up a CMS system based on eBay. eBay offers the affiliate marketer nearly unlimited Niche opportunities. Unfortunately you would need to be a programmer or hire a programmer to set up an effective method if not for this software (Or a similar product like PHPBAY for WordPress).

The Build a Niche Store script is very easy to set up and is 100% compatible with Host Gator reseller hosting. Remember this is a “Niche” store builder. This is why reseller hosting is important. It would cost way too much to buy individual accounts for each store you set up. And to be effective with BANS you’ll want to set up at least half a dozen targeted niche sites. It’s not uncommon to make $200-$400 a month from this type of website marketing. I personally stack as many as 40 domains on a reseller account with no problems.

The BANS script uses a MYSQL database (Which is simple to set up using the “wizard” feature on any CPANEL host like Host Gator). Here is a trick that will save you a ton of time when installing the script. Don’t unzip the script on your computer and FTP. Instead open CPANEL, create a folder Called “BAN SCRIPT”, then upload the Zipped (Yes I said ZIPPED script to that folder). After it’s uploaded you simply use Cpanel, select the ZIPPED Script and select EXTRACT. Once extracted you open the US Folder (Or one of the other 11 countries supported) and simply drag the files to your root level. This is so much FASTER than FTP.

Installation is a breeze, you change permissions on one file, go to your domain and follow the onscreen instructions. It took me a bout 15 minutes start to finish (Including uploading and creating the MYSQL Database) to install this script.

I spent about 2 hours going through the manual feature by feature. About 2 hours later I had created a Header Banner, inserted my eBay Code and adjusted all the settings. So start to finish having never used this software before in 5-6 hours (Basically a long afternoon) I had a completely functional eBay Powered Website installed. A site that will require almost ZERO MAINTENANCE. Now all I have to do is promote it – which I did by plugging it into an existing site with an IFRAME.

The next day I created another BANS site in about an hour! Powerful! Most people will want to create a half dozen sites and then go out and promote them. This is so powerful because you don’t waste any of your time “Designing” or worrying about SEO (Beyond selecting and placing your targeted keywords). This frees you to focus on marketing. And if you want to there are additional Content Creation tools so you can write your own articles. Or (cringe) even copy and paste related articles.

Simple, Easy, and Effective if you can drive traffic and market your new niche sites you can make money with BANS. This is a great way for a beginner to get their feet wet with a proven affiliate opportunity.

Build as many sites as you want with as many products as you want. Your license is not limited for your own use. If you build for clients or sell one of your sites then the buyer will need to aquire their own license.

FYI: BANS has an extremely simple ADVERTISEMENT layout. All you have to do is copy and paste in your affiliate code to any product you would like to sell in addition to your eBay Niche Products. Yes you can promote Google’s Adense program, YPN, Adbrite, Bitvertiser, CJ, or anything else. Your ads can appear above your listings, on either side, or below or all of the above. And you can easily display one set of ads on your Homepage, and entirely different ads on all your content pages. Simple!

A Good Place for New Marketers to Start

As mentioned in the review above BANS is a great way to jump-start your affiliate marketing career. Starting out in Affiliate Marketing can be Tough! Where do you start? What do you sell? How do you set up a great looking website? How to you find Affiliate Programs willing to work with you and your new site?

Might I suggest a new angle. Don’t try to sell “Make Money From Home”. Don’t try to do what everyone else is doing. There are a whole lot of marketers that are very experienced ready to crush your dreams. Pick a niche product and get to work.

Sell What you Know!!!

Do you have a hobby? What do you collect? What do you know about? Photography? Tennis? Golf? Electric Trains? Sports Cards? Baby Stuff? The list is quite extensive! Sell what you know! But how do you do that? You won’t always find an affiliate opportunity in your niche, but you know that people are buying products and services related to it don’t you?  BANS And eBay to the rescue!  If your niche idea is not being marketed on eBay it’s probably too small.
